FAQ / Details
If I'm a newcomer to Core, where's the best place to start?
Check out our getting started page to quickly get up to speed and begin creating. For a more structured set of tutorials, follow along with our free courses at Core Academy.
What is a diversifier?
Diversifiers are a tradition of the Global Game Jam that add an extra layer of challenge or direction to your jam project. These are meant to be used in addition to the Jam theme. More info on GGJ Diversifiers can be found at https://globalgamejam.org/news/ggj-online-diversifiers
Can I make unique looking art in Core?
Yup! From high fantasy to dark wonderlands to modern military, we've got assets to match the mood - and thousands of primitives and materials to kitbash your own from scratch as well! Our art director's blog post describes the ideology behind it all, for those who are curious.
Can I use community content?
Yes, it is encouraged! Please do give credit (in your game descriptions) to pay it forward.
What is a Jam site and which one do I choose?
Traditionally, Global Game Jam takes place at jam sites around the world; designated spots set up to host Global Game Jam participants. This year, however, GGJ has decided to allow online & remote jammers as well! When registering for a site, it is recommended (but not required) that you choose one close to your area. However, joining a jam site is a way for you to find like-minded developers and engage with the GGJ community, your choice of jam site does NOT affect your ability to collaborate with other jammers or your project's visibility!
How will prizing work?
Our $10,000 prize pool is split into 5 separate awards:
-
1st: $5,000 USD, 2nd: $3,000 USD, 3rd: $1,000 USD, 4th: $600 USD, 5th: $400 USD
-
Entries will be judged by our Manticore Games judging panel. For these awards, we are looking at overall quality of the game and adherence to both the jam theme and the terms of the diversifier (Using Core to create your game).
Can I update my entry after submitting?
Yes. But beware, judges will only be reviewing your entry once, so if you push a last-minute update and it has a game-breaking bug that will be reflected in your score. Because of this, it is heavily recommended to stick to the deadline. To keep things as fair as possible, judges will be playing the submitted games in a random order.
Can I work Solo / Can I work with a team?
While going solo is an option, a lot of the fun of game jams, particularly Global Game Jam, comes from working with a group! We encourage you to check out our #ggj22-teams Discord channel for finding teams during this jam.
How are winners paid?
We use Tipalti to pay winners in their local currency. Winners will be contacted via email with the details. Please open a support ticket if you have questions regarding payment.
What if I'm under 18?
Ask your parent or guardian to submit your entry on your behalf. They will receive the prize and then can pass it on to you at their discretion.
Where can I see the official rules?
